PLANETARY BOUNDARIES FRESK
This workshop helps to understand the nine planetary boundaries that humanity must not exceed to ensure a stable environment.
What is it about ?
The Planetary Boundaries Mural is a workshop that explores the nine environmental thresholds defined by the scientific community. These thresholds, such as climate change, ocean acidification or disruption of the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, represent the limits that must not be exceeded to ensure a functional terrestrial system.
Why is it essential ?
Planetary boundaries provide a solid scientific basis for assessing the limits that must not be crossed if we want to preserve an environment that is conducive to human life. They remind us that human actions must be conducted within these limits in order to ensure a sustainable future. By raising awareness, this workshop aims to promote responsible management of natural resources.
Key scientific facts
The workshop builds on the work of researchers such as Johan Rockström and Will Steffen, who have defined the nine critical environmental limits. Evidence shows that four of these boundaries have already been crossed, exposing humanity to major ecological risks. Respecting these limits is essential to stabilize the climate and avoid ecosystem collapse.
Process and duration
This workshop lasts approximately 3 hours. It begins with an introduction to the nine boundaries, followed by a phase of discovery of the maps representing each of them. Participants then discuss the interactions between these boundaries and the risks to ecosystems if they are crossed. The last phase allows us to address collective solutions to stay within these limits.
