SOIL FRESK

Workshop to understand the challenges of soil degradation and their importance for biodiversity and agriculture.

What is it about ?

La Fresque du Sol highlights the fundamental role of soils in ecosystems. By exploring the ecological functions of soil, this workshop raises awareness of soil degradation caused by human activities such as intensive agriculture and urbanization. It is a collaborative workshop that helps participants understand the importance of preserving soil quality to ensure food security and healthy ecosystems.

Process and duration

The workshop lasts approximately 3 hours and takes place in three phases. First, participants discover the ecological functions of soils (water retention, support for vegetation, etc.). Then, they address the causes of their degradation, such as erosion or pollution. Finally, a collective discussion phase helps identify sustainable solutions to protect and regenerate soils.

Key scientific facts

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), around 33% of the world’s soils are already degraded. Unsustainable agricultural practices, urbanization and pollution contribute to this degradation. Soils also play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, making them an important ally in the fight against climate change.

Why is it essential ?

Soils are essential to life on Earth. They are home to rich biodiversity, regulate water and nutrient cycles, and enable food production. Their degradation compromises the ability of ecosystems to regenerate and support human life. Protecting soils is therefore a prerequisite for ensuring the resilience of societies in the face of environmental change.
