TECH-BATTLE
Workshop that highlights the technological issues related to the ecological impact of the digital industry and technological innovations.
Key scientific facts
According to the Shift Project, the digital sector is responsible for 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and this figure could double by 2025. Participants also learn that the production of a smartphone requires 70 different materials, including rare metals, often extracted in unsustainable conditions. The workshop presents solutions such as digital sobriety and the promotion of the circular economy in the tech sector.
Process and duration
The workshop takes place in 3 phases over a period of 3 hours. First, participants explore emerging technologies, such as 5G or connected objects, and their impact on the environment. Then, a discussion begins around the challenges of resource management (rare metals, energy) necessary for the production of these technologies. Finally, the last phase is devoted to more sustainable technological solutions and the importance of responsible innovation.
What is it about ?
The Tech-battle is a workshop that explores the environmental consequences of the increasing use of digital technologies. Through this workshop, participants discover the tensions between the advantages of technological innovations (artificial intelligence, connected objects) and the negative impacts on natural resources and the climate. They are encouraged to reflect on the possible levers to reconcile technological innovation and respect for the environment.
Why is it essential ?
Digital is a booming sector, but it has a high environmental cost due to energy consumption, the resources required and the waste generated. It is crucial to better understand these issues in order to promote more sustainable technologies and encourage more responsible consumption choices. This workshop helps to reconcile innovation and respect for the environment, while raising awareness of the hidden impacts of our digital uses.
