RTBF: Building Internal Capacity for Digital Sustainability

Context
RTBF, the Belgian public broadcaster, wanted to move beyond one-off awareness sessions. After running the Digital Collage, the teams asked for an approach they could sustain and scale internally, adapted to the public broadcaster's context and audience.
Objectives
Build RTBF's internal capacity to raise awareness on digital sustainability across the organisation, through a train-the-trainer programme and a tailored workshop format.
Intervention
Step 1
Digital Collage workshop: Run the initial awareness session exploring the environmental impacts of digital technologies, from devices to data infrastructure. Build a shared understanding of the systemic links between technology, resources, and climate. Surface the questions and interests that would shape the next steps. Use the workshop insights to scope the follow-up work.
Step 2
Tech Fresk creation: Design a tailored workshop specifically for RTBF's context and audience. Identify the sector impacts and action levers that matter for a public broadcaster. Frame discussions around sustainable practices and innovations relevant to media. Build a format that RTBF facilitators can run on their own afterwards.
Step 3
Train-the-trainer programme: Train internal facilitators to deliver the workshop autonomously. Provide visual, simplified, and practical content suited to the teams in training. Alternate group work and guided discussions to anchor the learning. Hand over facilitation materials that match RTBF's internal culture.
Step 4
Connection to organisational practices: Link the workshop to other RTBF sustainability modules on energy, waste, and related topics. Position the Tech Fresk as the first step in a broader green transition path. Equip facilitators to connect the workshop content to daily operational decisions. Set the ground for long-term scale within the organisation.
Results
- Strong engagement and active participation throughout the workshops
- Better understanding of the environmental footprint of digital technologies
- Internal team trained and equipped to scale awareness across RTBF autonomously
- First levers identified for more responsible digital practices
Key takeways
When a one-off workshop sparks genuine interest, the next step is to build internal expertise so awareness can scale and last inside the organisation.
