SNCB: From GRI Baseline to CSRD-Ready Reporting

Transport & logistics
2023

Context

SNCB, Belgium's national rail operator, had an existing non-financial reporting practice based on GRI standards and prepared for the wave of European directives covering CSRD, Taxonomy, and CSDDD.

Objectives

Lay the groundwork for CSRD, Taxonomy, and CSDDD implementation, with governance processes and indicators that serve the public service contract.

Intervention

Step 1

Data collection: Identify internal reporting needs and stakeholders involved. Assess existing data collection systems and indicators against GRI requirements. Align current reporting practices with GRI standards. Document the gaps that need to be closed before consolidation.

Step 2

Data processing: Collect and verify ESG data across the scope defined. Integrate KPIs that meet GRI expectations. Plan CSRD compliance in sequence, identifying the datapoints required for future reports. Set a calendar aligned with upcoming regulatory deadlines.

Step 3

Action plan: Analyse activities eligible for the European Green Taxonomy. Map risks and opportunities connected to CSDDD. Gather internal needs and regulatory expectations into a single view. Define governance processes and ESG indicators that match both.

Step 4

Synthetic report: Consolidate the GRI-compliant report. Revise the double materiality approach with updated stakeholder input. Extend the stakeholder perimeter to include external voices. Build a gap analysis from GRI to CSRD, with Taxonomy benchmark and CSDDD initiation plan.

Results

  • Double materiality approach revised and stakeholder perimeter extended
  • Roadmap built for CSRD, Taxonomy, and CSDDD compliance
  • GRI-to-CSRD gap analysis and Taxonomy sector benchmark completed

Key takeways

For a public transport operator, non-financial reporting is a strategic tool: it anticipates European obligations and supports the public service contract across departments.
