The Workshop
Inspired by the Climate Fresk model, this collaborative workshop gives a three-hour look at how structures of domination inherited from colonialism still shape economic, cultural and political relations between peoples. Participants link cards showing historical mechanisms (resource extraction, slavery, the erasure of knowledge and languages) to their present-day forms (debt, unequal trade agreements, cultural hierarchies, migration).
Why It Matters
Global inequalities did not appear out of nowhere: they come from centuries of domination whose effects persist, often unseen by those who do not bear them. Understanding these mechanisms is a starting point for building fairer international, professional and social relationships, and for looking at one's own blind spots.
Good to Know
The workshop draws on the work of historians and researchers in postcolonial and decolonial studies. It builds a systemic understanding and does not set out to assign individual blame. It suits all audiences aged 16 and over, whether at work, in local communities or in higher education. It also gives participants space to imagine, together, the proposals, narratives and courses of action that move beyond the colonial paradigm.
What to Expect
Working in teams of 4 to 16, participants link the cards through cause and effect, guided by a facilitator trained in collective intelligence. A second, creative phase invites participants to personalise their fresco. The workshop ends with a discussion of the approaches and concrete actions to consider, both individually and collectively.
