The Workshop
This collaborative workshop helps participants understand the foundations, mechanisms and vulnerabilities of human rights as set out in the 1948 Universal Declaration: civil and political rights, economic, social and cultural rights, national and international protection mechanisms, and the factors that lead to their violation. The cards link key legal principles to the realities communities actually live through.
Why It Matters
Human rights are never guaranteed for good: they hold only as long as legal, political and social mechanisms protect them. Understanding those mechanisms is what makes it possible to defend them. The workshop gives participants the tools to make sense of current affairs, humanitarian crises and public policy from this standpoint.
Good to Know
The content draws on the founding texts of international law (the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 1966 Covenants and specialised conventions) and on reports from the UN, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. It suits a wide audience, from the general public to legal and humanitarian professionals.
What to Expect
Working in teams of 4 to 16, participants link the cards through cause and effect to reconstruct how human rights work and how they are violated. The session ends with an open discussion of individual and collective courses of action, whether through organisations or institutions.
